Obituary of BETTY MURTON

MURTON, Betty (M. Elizabeth Hammond) – formerly of 264 Howard Street, Waterford, ON, passed away peacefully at Chippawa Creek at Bella Retirement Home, Niagara Falls, ON Saturday, February 1st, 2025 in her 101st year. Predeceased by husband Douglas Noel Murton, parents William and Minerva Hammond, sister Doris Landon (Alex) and brother Douglas (RCAF, 1944).   Beloved Mother of Suzanne Guest (Russell) Niagara Falls, ON and Roderick Murton (Kim), Hamilton, ON. Betty is lovingly remembered by granddaughter Marissa of Vancouver, BC, grandson Eddie (Amanda) and great-grandson Bentley of Forest Home, NS, as well as many nieces and nephews who she cherished very much. Betty was a longtime member of Trinity Anglican Church in Waterford as well as a member of the ACW. She and Douglas served within the church throughout their lives together and enjoyed the fellowships and friendships they experienced. Prior to retirement Betty worked at the Brook Woollen Mill in Simcoe, Norfolk Co-Op Medical Services, Earl Welsh Realty and finished her career working as a manager for the Ontario Ministry of Government Services in Townsend. In 1949-1950 she was President of the Norfolk Junior Farm Girls. During this time, she met Douglas, who was the President of the Norfolk Junior Farmers. During their term as presidents, the Junior Farmers’ Building was donated by the Government to the Norfolk County Fair. When the Minister of Agriculture came to make the presentation after the building had been moved on site, Douglas and Betty presided at the inaugural banquet as representatives of the Norfolk Junior Farmer Clubs. Betty was an avid gardener, and she became a very active member of the Waterford Horticultural society where she held many roles and won numerous awards. Cremation has taken place and a private interment will be held at a later date. Her family will receive relatives and friends on Saturday, February 22, 2025 from 1-3 p.m. at Thompson Mott Funeral Home, 62 Main Street North, Waterford, ON. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to donate in memory of Betty are asked to consider the Alzheimer’s Society or the Ontario Horticultural Association (OHA).
