Winifred was one of the 20 or so cousins who gathered with our uncles and aunts for Boxing Day at the Lloyd-Smith home several times in the ‘60’s. It was always good fun, with charades (yes I actually liked charades), great food and a general hoopla all round. I didn’t stay in touch, except I think Fred (who I remember as Win in her younger years as I gather others do too) joined a rare zoom call on Boxing Day in 2020, organized by David Oliver. Win was part of the general sense of warmth, wider family, Christmas traditions and good spirited fun in those earlier Boxing Day parties. It’s sad to know she has died, the first cousin since my brother Chris died over 30 years ago, I believe. Nephew Jamie’s email to her was very touching and evidence of a rich life and impact. I send my deepest condolences to her children and her siblings and their families. Brian Gifford, Halifax

We offer our sincere condolences to Alana, Wes and family.
We first met ‘Fred in 2003 when we adopted Shannon from her. Shannon was a gentle dog and we believe she held the record for longevity at Bracadale. We had her for 17 years.
Over the years a friendship formed through our mutual love of Gordon Setters and we adopted Shannon’s half brother Sage. Four years later he was joined by Sage’s nephew Rex.
We had wanted a “Small girl” but ‘Fred had Rex earmarked for us. We happily took him home. On a subsequent visit to the farm with Sage and Rex, I remarked on how much larger Rex was than his siblings. ‘Fred grinned and said “Well you should have known how large he would grow. I told you we named him “Big Foot” as soon as he was born”.
That was ‘Fred with her practical sense of humour we loved.
(Rex is now 85lbs….he grew into his feet).
Over the years I would send ‘Fred updates on the dogs from their point of view on grooming, vet visits and their latest antics. I didn’t know until fairly recently, ‘Fred had enjoyed reading the updates so much, she had shared them with family and friends.
‘Fred we will miss you and we thank you for all the joy you have given us through Shannon, Sage and Rex.
It was a privilege to call you a friend.
The world is a better place because you were here.
Farewell with much love and respect.
Alan and Cathy Sutton.

Peter and Alma Scovil donated to the Canadian Cancer Society in memory of Winnifred. We live nearby in Waterford, and we also have a family cottage on Muldrew Lake, Muskoka, not far from her cottage. She graciously rented her cottage to friends of ours from England for many years.

Win started my love for dogs and got me into riding. Her calmness and collectedness helped me through many a trying situation. I have many great memories of Win - from Easter at her place, to competitive crokinole at the lake, to her visits to Montreal. She always had an interesting perspective on things that really got me to think.
One of my favourite memories of Win is from riding for the first time. My horse's trot was slower than the others, I squeezed with my legs a bit too hard, and came tearing past Win and my sister before somehow managing to come to a stop. Win burst out laughing - we all know her great laugh - before explaining what had happened, and telling me how great I had handled the situation.
When our daughter was born, she was kept in the hospital for several weeks, a very scary time. The doctors were not communicating much. Win was there for us, and talked us through things over the phone, explaining every detail. She gave us answers that helped keep us calm through it all. I can only imagine how different things would have been without her caring support.
Laura really connected with Win at the lake, and will never forget her first time out in a canoe (after some solid encouragement from Win).
We will all miss her greatly.

My heartfelt sympathies extend to all those who feel Win’s passing deeply and mourn her vital presence in their lives. I especially feel for her two children, Wesley and Alana, who accompanied her so lovingly during her sickness and at the end.
One year behind her, Win and I were like sisters during our many Magog summers at the lake. We did everything together and forged an enduring bond that was easily renewed in our adult years. Together we were intent on proving that girls were just as strong and capable as boys. No dolls or frilly dresses for us. We ran and played hard and fast. We also snuck and devoured on more than one occasion gallons of ice cream in the dead of night while sleeping in the shed. I remember when Win swam out to me after I badly put my back out while wind surfing in my twenties. She reassured me and made sure I got to shore. Win was an admirable woman and inspired me with her drive and discipline, her lust for life and adventure. And when in need, her caring and kind presence made me feel safe. I will miss her.

Here Win is piping Mark and my wedding party to the Auberge in Georgeville, PQ. Am thinking these are the same pipes that will be played today for Win.
So glad Win and I reconnected in the last few years.

Fred and I met when our kids were in elementary French school and since then we kept a close relationship. Our sons Wesley and Ben continue to be best friends as well. We shared many memories. The time she help Camilla when she was 5 and had her tonsils removed. She was right there with us for support. The time we shared at her cottage close to Mudford. The many times we take turned picking our children from the Swimming team practices and many many more. Fred you will be forever in our hearts.

Fred and I had many equine adventures together from weekends at Mansfield to day trips St. Williams. My favourite memory though is the times we bushwacked at full gait, giggling like school girls.

PLease accept my condolences. I 've known Winna since I was 5 years old, in Montreal.
While in later years we didn't meet that often except up at Muldrew, I always appreciated her friendship and kindness over a shared lifetime of memories of good times.
Sincerely
Patricia Shotton (sister of Mary Saunders)

Annual BD fun on Dec 23 every year (Alana and Wes--you are still welcome)
Huge support in 1988
A very soggy wedding at Memorial Pines on Muldrew Lake
Long catch-ups on the dock over decades
I will miss you forever. -- Mary Saunders

My life has been better because I had Fred in it. She was my dear room mate at Atlantic College for two years and after was generous enough to share her family with me while I lived in Canada for five years. Her mum and dad welcomed me into their home as one more in the family. Her mum used to say that I was a good influence because I made her do more “artsy” things when I was visiting. In exchange, she got me into more physical pursuits. I think of her every time I go canoeing. We have kept in close contact through the decades and she is much missed. My love to her family and most specially to Wes and Alana. She was so proud of you!
