Many of you have spoken of Hugh's big heartedness. Hugh got the quality of big heartedness from his parents. He was taught well. I particularly remember Hugh's father sitting down teaching me mathematics when I was a young girl while working at my father's gas station in Waterford. What a wonderful man Hugh's father was; a true teacher. I was very grateful for those times that Mr. Sutherland would take out of his day in the summer months to teach me some of the mathematic skills I lacked. I have never forgotten Mr. Sutherland. He was a gift from God.

On behalf of Shawn who has worked with Hugh in theatre and has had him to our home as to where I met Hugh and enjoyed his visits. Shawn is very sad that he will not be able to attend the service for Hugh but will be there in heart and soul. Hugh was a kind and gentle man with such a huge passion for theatre. We will miss Hugh and will always remember

Hugh was an incredible man in all his talents. Even back in public school, Hugh had an amazing memory for great plays and history tidbits about anything theatrical. I was fortunate enough to have a little visit with Hugh a couple years before I moved out west and he was always excited to see old friends.
He was a big man with an even bigger heart and all who knew him will miss him. My dear friend Hugh, may you always enjoy the best roles on that big stage in the sky. God bless always and may you rest in peace. You will be missed!!

A very sweet man. Worked with him in one of the schools. Had such a passion for theatre and literature which he shared with us over lunch and visits to the library. Thinking of his friends and family at this time.

I want everyone to know, if you don't already, that Hugh was one of the nicest guys I've ever met. When I was going through some serious serious stuff a few years ago he really helped me through it when he totally didn't have to.
He was a big encouragement to my acting. He came to my shows, even driving to Toronto. Always had nice things to say.
It was fun when he came to see Shakespeare in Hollywood on our final night at Papermill Theatre by the DVP. I invited him out to the cast party with us and it was such a great night.
Remembering things like how much he loved telling his ghost stories. Seeing the energy he would bring with him on stage and how much fun he was having up there.
It's just so shocking to hear. We lost an amazing person today.
My heart's with the family and other friends. I'm sure he touched a lot of hearts.

I especially remember Hugh for his theatrical presence, whether sharing ghost stories at Brantford museum, or last year's Scare in the Square late evening wagon rides or his performance in A Christmas Carol. He enjoyed entertaining and was a good, kind person. God bless you, Hugh.

Hugh Sutherland was a fellow actor, friend, and more importantly, he was family to me. I am crushed by his sudden and unexpected departure from this world. Hugh, you were the best friend any person could ever have, you were always there to talk to, you always made sure people were Ok and genuinely wanted to know how people were. You expected nothing out of return but gave so much of yourself. Hugh, you could light up a room even in the darkest of hours. Your passion for theatre wasn't matched by anyone also while you were in the Hamilton Hospital; the passion, energy, and joy you had while speaking about theatre was inspiring. You have made so many people's lives richer just by them having met you. You had a giant heart only matched by your` giant laugh that brought comfort and joy to those around you. Hugh, you were and still are my best friend. You are physically gone, but you will never be forgotten you have forever etched your name in theatre and in life in stone (Your very own). Thank you for being my friend and thank you for being part of my family you will always be in my heart. Take your final bow, and rest with no more pain. I know you will always be looking down on us from up above smiling and pouring down the warmth, happiness, and joy you always brought while you were here.

I have very fond memories of working with Hugh for a brief time in theatre in Brantford. He was a dedicated bright light in our theatre group, and I understand he brought the same wonderful level of commitment to everything he did. Clearly he loved to be and work with people. A life well lived. My sincere condolences.
