I lived with Jen Defreyne for three wonderful years when we were students together at McMaster. Jen changed my life. She taught me to be joyful. Jen was larger than life, hilarious and the funnest person I have ever known. I'm sure I laughed more in those three years with her than I have in all the years since. We didn't see each other as often as we should have after we moved to different cities, but whenever I saw her again it was like not a day had passed. She had a way of connecting with people instantly and forever. She was brilliant. She was kind. She was generous. She was wonderful. It has taken me days to write this tribute, though I've carried it in my heart since I heard the news. I can't bear to acknowledge she is gone. Much love to Jen Shepherd and Jen's entire family.

I had the privilege of knowing Jen when she worked at Vale in Long Harbour, Nl. A very intelligent and dedicated employee. I attended a presentation that she gave on the hydrometaluric process of nickel and I have to say no one could have done it better. Condolences to all the family.

Jen, you have been such an important mentor to me (and I’m sure to all of our tech services family in Long Harbour). You’ve been an inspiration to many, not only in your courage and fight against your illness but also in your reaction to the initial diagnosis by having a party and gathering loved ones around you. For me, you’ve been an inspiration since the day I met you. You were a rock star in the mining industry and hands down the best manager I’ve ever had. You were dedicated to doing things that make sense, improving strategies and enforcing the rules of business casual (skinny jeans are approved, shorts and flip flops are not!). It was certainly a pleasure to work with you and to be friends outside of work as well. You were never afraid to do you, whether that meant getting deferred from phase 1 to start a farm, coming back to show us all how it’s done, and finally starting your own brewery! Thank you for everything you’ve taught me over the years and for inspiring us all to shoot for the moon.
We will be toasting to you in meeting room 7 for many years. I hope that your family and friends find peace in knowingness the influence you have had on the world. God bless!
