In 1971, I was an 18-year-old Quebecer who came to Ontario to harvest tobacco in order to pay for my studies. I had the chance to work on the farm of Tony Van Den Hurk, who was an excellent grower and an exemplary boss. At the time, I remember he sometimes walked around with his wooden clogs, and knew how to encourage us in the work of picking and drying tobacco. His nice children also participated in the work. I remember that Madame Van Den Hurk sometimes asked me after meals to speak to her in French, it reminded her that French-Canadians had liberated several towns in Holland during the war. When I returned to Quebec, the check that Mr. Van Den Hurk had given me was destroyed while washing my pants... Very disappointed, I telephoned Mr. Van Den Hurk to explain the Situation to him, and he did not hesitate to mail me a new check. I will never forget this honest and caring man.
Mes sincères condoléances à toute sa famille.
Benoit Chevalier, Quebec

Ome Tony was a father to me. He and Tante Gerda are my godparents. I will miss his warm sense of humour and kindness to me over all the years. They looked after me when a was a toddler, when my mother Dora (Gerda's sister) was ill. Tante Gerda also saved my life when I was little, so I owe them a lot. As a result I have always felt a part of the Van Den Hurk family. One of my favourite memories was when I was a kid on the farm, and had to go fill in the gopher holes in the pasture so that he and the rest of the ‘Flying Dutchmen’ could play football (soccer) as often as possible, between the rigorous duties of the farm. And the barn dances where everyone came and along with everyone else, used to slip a good waltz or polka or two on the saw dust on the dance floor. He loved that! He was always so active and filled with energy and spirit. I used to like to listen at the heat vent upstairs in the big farmhouse, long after I was supposed to be asleep of course, to the uncles gathering for their loud, to say the least, and 'lively' card games. I think I might have learned a few Dutch words that kids aren't supposed to know haha.
Miss you Ome Tony. Love forever. My condolences to Tante Gerda and all the family, which I have been blessed to be a part of.
