One Palm Sunday in church Dzaidek, Babcia, and uncle Joe were sitting in the pew in front of us. During the mass my dad decided to tickle Dzaidek's ear with the end of a palm leaf, Dzaidek thinking that it was a fly would try to swat it away. After a couple of times Dzaidek turned to Babcia and said "the flys here are bad Pauly". Almost every time I go to church i think of that story and to this day I still laugh, I love you Dzaidek and thank you for being my grandfather

He was a self made man full of pride and a genuine love for his family. You were the patriarch of our clan and you always made me feel proud to be a Korczak! I miss the days of you stopping by to see how I was doing. Thank you for sharing all your stories of a life well lived. I will always hold close to me all the memories. Dad went to Hagersville auction to buy a cow. Auctioneer was trying to sell a crippled puppy. No bids. Hey John, offer me a dollar so that we can get the bidding going. Sure! Dad speaks up...One Dollar. Sold! Dad was too ashamed and brought the dog home. Mom gave him heck about wasting the dollar. Dog could not walk. It galloped. He sounded like a horse running. The dog grew into a monster who loved and protected our family. This dog and another dog we had, dragged a rabid fox away that tried to attack me when I went out to the chicken coop. Thanks Dad for looking after me and our family. Will always remember the great times. Ray.

John gave huge bear hugs, told great stories, loved my sister, Polly, with a never-ending love and was a terrific, much loved addition to the Moskal family. He was the one we could go to for memories of days gone by. What a mind he had! When I began researching our family history, he would come up with the most wonderful tidbits of information. With permission, may I share with you a few things about his early years that you may not be aware of?
In 1927, the Korczak family emigrated from Poland with a number of friends including the Kurzyna and Woytaz families. At one point during the voyage by ocean liner, John, who was only 4 1/2 years old thought he'd catch a fish and almost went overboard. He was rescued by Mr. Frank Kurzyna who grabbed his pantleg and dragged him back. John & Polly met at Sophie Rzeszutek's wedding to Walter Kisielewski, and again later at a Polish picnic in June. Jake Proracki told John to go after Polly (who was there with her boyfriend Paul)and that if he had any trouble muscling in on the action, Jake would help take him out. Well, by the end of June, they were engaged and later married on October 30, 1943 at St. Mary's R.C. Church in Simcoe. The reception was at the Moskal farm on the Cherry Valley Road in Waterford. The newlyweds worked on the farm and in Brantford in the winter - John at Massey-Ferguson's Machinery and Polly at Slingsby's, sewing. They bought a neighbouring farm that had an orchard on it and grew vegetables as well. But one year the peach crop failed and the following year the tomato crop was devastated with blight. They then decided to buy the home farm where they have lived ever since, growing tobacco and other produce - from potatoes to strawberries. John and Polly raised Raymond, Larry, Joseph and Eva with love, laughter, discipline and religion. They have shared over 68 years of marriage - an undying love that has bonded them forever.
On behalf of Ted and myself as well as our extended family please accept our deepest and heartfelt condolences on the loss of a one in a million man.

Dearest Aunt Polly, Ray, Larry, Joe, Eva and families, My heart goes out to all of you at the passing of a most wonderful husband, father, dzadic, uncle, and my own personal godfather. As I think of Uncle John, and keep you all in my thoughts and prayers, the following scripture comes to mind: John 14:1-4 "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going." When I think of Uncle John, I think of love, generosity, sharing, and discipline because you need all of these qualities to show the true spirit that we all are as we go through the challenge of living our short lives on earth....all in preparation of living forever in heaven with our Lord and Saviour. May we all have peace in knowing that heaven is now blessed with the spirit of such a wonderful being. Let us all join in their song. Much love, Pam

Going to Tim Hortons was one of Dzaidek's favourite things to do. I have many memories of him in this coffee shop starting off as a little girl. One summer they were giving away a mountain bike to a certain numbered costumer. As I picked out my dounut Dziadek started to chat up a friend behind him. He ended up letting her go in front of us and guess what...yup, she won the bike :) I will never forget Dziadek's face. :)
When working at the health unit one summer I would leave on my morning break and walk down to Tim Hortons, and every morning that same beautiful smile greeted me. Some days I would have time to sit around the table with him and his friends and listen to them talk and laugh. It was truely a blessing to be part of it.
Thank you Dziadek for all that you have shown me and for all that you have done. Growing up right next door to my grandpartents made my childhood so much more special. I could write a novel of memories and special moments but I just want to thank you Dziadek for everything you have done.
I will miss hearing you belt out your songs and seeing you make your rounds around the farm sometimes barefoot. lol. you never wore shoes -- they are such a bother :) I like to think I got that trait from you, as well as being so emotional :)
You were a great man, I will cherish you always in my heart.

I remember my mom telling me stories about how Dziadek would braid her hair on the top of the toilet seat in the bathroom and that it was always too tight. So I thought that I would test out this theory while Sarah and I were over playing one day. I asked, "Dziadek would you braid my hair like you used to my mom's?" He said "Sit down here sweetheart and I'll try". My God! That man still had the magic in his fingers because I thought my eyeballs were going to pop out of my head the braids were so tight! Instant facelift! So I thanked him, and ran downstairs to try to loosen them with Sarah's help. I'll think of you every time I braid Gracie's hair from now on <3 Love forever, Rebecca

In the fall of 2010, I went to visit my parents and deliver the news that I wouldn't be able to help as much for a little while as I needed to undergo cancer treatments. After the tears that parents shed for their children, my dad asked what he could do to help. I said be positive and pray for me and thus began the year of special "Hail Mary's" for their daughter. My Dad, wanting to help, began weekly treks on the days of my treatments to deliver pizza to our house for supper. When their car would come up our driveway someone would yell "The Pizza Man Is Here". Joe would drive and Dad would ask how I was and deliver the pizza. He kept daily calls coming to keep track of how I was feeling and would tell me he loved me and would pray for me. I knew he wanted to do more but knew in my heart that it was too difficult at their age to watch me go through it. I loved the hugs and pizzas and will miss that Mercedes pulling in our driveway. It was a privilege to be your daughter. I love you daddy. Rest in peace with the angels. xo

Mr. Korczak was always full of good humour and high spirits! When we were in the hospital with Ronan (when he broke his arm), we heard Mr. Korczak before we saw him. We knew immediately it was him by his distinct voice. (He was cracking jokes with the nurses, of course.) Just talking to him that day brightened ours. I am sure that he brightened many days for many people with his smile and sense of humour. Growing up on the tobacco farm, I was lucky enough to spend countless days around my grandpa..., a lot more time then the majority. From trying to get onto the "big tractor" to disk up the land before he got on the tractor, to waiting every morning during harvest to see if he was going to show up with dougnuts or popsicles, just because he knew it would make all of us working happy. He was always someone I wanted to make pround and constantly looked for his approval on the farm and in life. While I was living at the farm, it was rare for more then a day to go by without seeing him in the house or driving through the yard, always with his signature big smile. I am sad to see him go but I take comfort in knowing that he lived a great life with many great accomplishments and many great friends. As I write this and find my emotions wheling up, shedding a tear, my grandpa again comes to mind as I have always said we got this damn emotional gene from him! (and I love that we have it) In the years ahead and as the days pass, I personally will not remember his last days or the sadness surrounding them..., no..., that will all fade very quickly. I will only remember all the great memories, the time I spent with him, the smiles, the hugs, the laughter and the influence he had in my life when he was here and will continue to have in the years to come.....I love you Dzadek. Dziadek was a Hero and Role Model to all of us grand kids. We all had a great privilege living so close to our Dziadek as we grew up. There was hardly a week that would pass that I wouldn't see Dziadek during my youth. I remember the day we were down working at "the other farm" (Dziadek's kiln yard) and Dziadek drove through our yard anyways. (He would always do this.) He found our dog choking on a large stick. Dziadek reached his hand down the dogs throat and saved it's life that day. Another day, Dziadek found a would be robber in our kitchen, Dziadek chased him away. And the day Dziadek was at the casino and a young man thought he would be an easy target to pick a wallet, well he found out he was wrong when he was lying face down in the carpet.
