CURRIE, DONALD JAMES; Passed away peacefully at his home on March 18, 2011 in his 92nd year, surrounded by his loving family. Predeceased by his loving wife Helen (nee Ritchie) and survived by his sister Mary Ritchie. Will be sadly missed by his children Robert (Ann), Susan (Frank), John, and Bonnie (Jerry). Loving grandfather of Todd (Krista), Shawn (Cathy), Brett (Jen), Jen (Brent), Bryan (April), David (Crystal), Katie (Mike), Stephanie, and Tyler. Great grandfather to Dustin, Riley, Alexis, Sawyer, and Emily. Long time companion of Jean Matalik. Don was born in Elmvale, Ontario on September 22, 1919 where he spent his early years. In 1941 he joined the Canadian Army. Upon leaving the army, he moved to Toronto where he established D.J. Currie Electric. In 1968 he and his family moved to Waterford where he became a Ginseng farmer. Over the next 43 years he was involved in numerous community activities. As a veteran of WWII, he joined the Waterford Royal Canadian Legion Branch 123 and became very involved in their activities. He served on the Executive Committee of the Waterford M.H.A. and was part of the Waterford Arena expansion project. Don was instrumental in organizing the Canadian Ginseng Growers Association and was the driving force bringing the first International Ginseng Association Convention in Canada to Waterford. After leaving Ginseng farming he devoted his time to collecting Antique Automobiles and Memorabilia,-his greatest passion-resulting in being one of the premier collections in the entire area. For 10 years, Don was the chairperson organizing car shows at the Waterford Pumpkinfest. He was a long time representative of the Long Point Region H.A.S.C. and regional representative of this car club. Don participated on other organizations and committees-too many to mention. A special thanks to the caring staff at Simcoe and Brantford General Hospitals, the DVA, the St. Elizabeth PSWs, the CCAC RNs and to numerous friends who provided support and assistance in his time of need-especially his transport team to appointments and treatments. Friends and relatives may call at the THOMPSON-MOTT FUNERAL HOME, Waterford, Sunday 2-4 pm. and Monday 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Funeral Service will be held in the chapel Tuesday at 11 am. Rev. Adolph Hahn officiating. Royal Canadian Legion Branch 123 Service Monday evening at 6:30 pm. Interment will follow at a later date in Elmvale, Ontario.
