On behalf of our family we send our thoughts and prayers to the Hellyer family. My Dad and Mom met Walter at Roy's horse auction in Erindale in 1960. He drove in with a friend of his in a 1 ton truck with a rack. Both of them had beards and overalls. He purchased a horse called Jr. Bill a stallion and a mare as well.
That is when the friendship started between Roy and Walter and of course Joan and Doreen back in 1960 at a horse sale.
Walter will be missed however his memories that they made will always be with us.
Warmest Regards
Roy, Joan, Bruce, Judi and Lee Ionson

I will remember my uncle, Uncle Walter with much love and admiration. He was a positive male figure in my life, particularly during the early years. I have many happy memories of time spent out at "the farm with my Aunt Doreen and Uncle Walter and cousins. He had such a "big personality" and his passion for farming and his family made an impression on me even then. My condolences to the Hellyer family.
with much love Sarah

On behalf of the Canadian Quarter Horse Association, I want to extend our sincere condolences to the entire Hellyer family on your loss. First, on behalf of all our OCHA members, I want to say how sorry we are to hear of Walter's passing. Walter truly is one of the main reasons we are still a very successful cutting horse association today. On a personal level, I had the privilege of meeting Walter, Doreen and their wonderful family in the early 70's. It is impossible to put into words how much their friendship has meant over the years.
Sending hugs,
Kathy Armstrong

Dear Doreen, Pam, Brenda, Warren, Victoria and all the Hellyer family:
We are sad to hear of Walter's passing. Our families' friendship spans a few generations, with many great memories. Walter was one of those "larger than life" characters to me - always interesting, with his varied business and community activities (farming, ranching, horse and cattle breeding, horse trailers, ginseng, Lions Club, carriages & art collecting, etc. to name just a few). I always appreciated that Walter let us "town kids" explore the farms and all the adventures they had to offer, even "hiring" us to pick apples (several did end up in the baskets). I will never forget the positive influences Walter and the Hellyer family imparted on my formative years.
May Walter rest in peace.
