I just found out Rick had passed... I flew with him back in '83 and '84. He was my flight instructor... while other students were afraid to fly with Rick (he was strict) I loved every minute flying with him... he booked me for my flight test without telling me and then sent me out to the airport to pick up the examiner... I was completely unprepared and passed anyway... after chasing Rick around the hanger and cornering him behind his desk in the office... he paid me a great compliment... he said... "If I told you about the test you would have over thought it and been up all night... you're one of the best natural pilots I've seen, I knew you'd ace it if I threw you at it... Thanks Rick, it was a privilege. Sean (Red) Ahearn

Rick was my commercial helicopter pilot instructor at Ranger Helicopter in 1987. We was a great pilot, teacher and friend. We just spoke a few years ago and he was about to retire. I told him I'd love to fly with him again but I didn't go.
I just found out today when I tried to reach him.
Very sad news.
Fly high but fly safe as always with you!
Hope to meet again.Captain Rick Kirkwood

Dear Bette,
I am so sorry to learn of Rick's passing. He truly was too young and you both
were such a lovely couple, it just does not seem fair.
He was such a fine man, if you ever needed help, he would be there. You both
made me feel welcome, always.
I remember the day he came down and cut my lawn, and the day I hit my head
on something and was bleeding, not knowing quite where on my head but
Rick sized up the problem and all was well.
He and you will never be forgotten, I am sure by everyone you both have touched.
I will keep you and Rick in my heart and I pray that all your wonderful memories
and years together will help you through this time of loss.
Love,
Leslie

To the family of Rick Kirkwood, my friend.
I am so very sorry to learn of Rick's passing, he was a good friend and a great person.
My name is Mark Wiskemann , a pilot, a former employee and longtime friend of Ricks.
Rick gave me my first real job as a helicopter pilot back in 1980 as the chief pilot for Ranger helicopters in the Soo.
I always noticed how Rick handled his responsibilities so very well moreover the people with which he dealt with in a professional but very human and kind way..
Later on he became my Transport Canada 'Principal Inspector' for the helicopter business I later started and currently operate, so I had a chance to see Rick every year during the annual pilot's exam.
He always saw aviation in a very realistic way I felt, and had a way of keeping the bureaucracy out of the cockpit during exam time which was noticed and appreciated by me each time we got together.
I offer my deepest condolences to you, Betty and your and Rick's entire family.
Rick was a great pilot and a generous man!
With Kind Regards
Mark

Bette....our deepest & heartfelt condolences go out to you & the whole family. Some things are hard to fathom & accept, & Rick's passing is truly one of them. From the first time we met you both here in Fla., we knew what a special man he was....so kind & helpful to his friends & neighbors, forever displaying his quick wit & readiness to laugh, & always a true gentleman. He was hard working, but also enjoyed what Fla. had to offer & you both hosted wonderful, fun house parties here. I can also still picture him heading down the road on his big yellow bike. And we will always be impressed with his artistic & creative talents in making awesome fish from palm fronds. We are so grateful for the couple of visits we had with you both the end of March before you left Fla. and will cherish those memories especially forever. We have lost a dear, great friend who we will never forget. So sorry for your loss.

Encountering Rick in my travels as a helicopter pilot for a similar 45 years was always a pleasure .
Last time I came upon Rick was at the Erie Beach Hotel in Pt.Dover where he had taken his mother for a meal on Mothers Day - I had my mother there too for the same reason . I was born and raised in Brantford and felt similar ties to that area , where Rick and I were raised .
A Transport Canada Inspector that did annual checks with Rick and I while we're making a living as helicopter instructors said many times to me how Rick and I were so similar in how we instructed and worked with our students - to be held at such high esteem by comparison to Rick will never be forgotten by myself .
My wife ( Sue ) and I wish to express our condolences and we will try to make it to Waterford at the Legion on Sunday .

My dear Rick: I have so many memories of you the day you were born, as a child, going to Florida with us, going to Europe, becoming a helicopter pilot, becoming a father, husband, the parties, Credence Clearwater and an amazing nephew. You have left everyone of us who knew you with just the very best memories, stories to tell and the memory of you to cherish. Love Auntie Carol
