Please share a memory of MARY to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
SMITH, Mary Jolly - The life long journey of 99 years for Mary Jolly Smith (nee McQueen) reached its final destination point in Qualicum Beach, British Columbia on January 4, 2019. Mary's journey began in Rutherglen Scotland on November 28, 1919. She was a sister to John, Harry, Margret, and Isobel (predeceased). Mary completed her primary schooling and went to work in the carpet industry to help support the family. At the outbreak of WW 11 she proudly supported the war effort through her work in a munitions factory in Glasgow where she survived several bombing attempts. Mary immigrated to Canada where she married Tom Smith(deceased) and resided in Waterford Ontario where she spent her summers working in the tobacco industry and helping Tom with chores on his parent's small farm. In her active years Mary spent her spare time bowling, reading, playing euchre and supporting various community events through the local Legion and Ladies Auxiliary. After Tom's passing she moved to Cochrane, Alberta where she resided with her son Ian and daughter in law Valerie Doenz on their acreage. Mary was readily accepted in to the Doenz clan and was often referred to as Mother Mary by Valerie's family. Mary made many new friends in Cochrane area, enjoyed spending time visiting the Bethany senior`s day program, riding her electric scooter up and down the Retreat Road, reading, and watching her beloved Maple Leafs and Blue Jays. At the age of 89 Mary journeyed for 2 days in a pickup truck to Vancouver Island to again be with Ian and Valerie. Over the next 10 years Mary resided in Comox, Parksville, and Qualicum Beach. Mary made many friends in her travels through her life journey. She was guided to her final destination point holding the hand of her deeply loved daughter in law Valerie. Mary was a true Auld Scot who loved her tea, a nip of scotch and was feisty to the end. She will be missed by all who knew her. Valerie and Ian would like to express their sincere thanks to the entire staff, especially the Blue Wing of the Eagle Park Lodge for their utmost professional and yet personal care of our dear Mother. A Celebration of Mary's Life will be held at the Waterford Legion Br. #123 on Wednesday January 16, 2019 from 12-2pm. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to your favourite charity.
