Carol and family, I extend our condolences from Lisa and myself. Phil was the fun uncle that shared his passion for fishing and nature with his nieces and nephews. I really enjoyed those early trips and his passion rubbed off on me.

We are very sad to learn of Phil's passing. He was a terrific biologist and friend to both of us. Our friendship spanned more than four decades and covered the span of the Province. He willingly shared his knowledge, humour and compassion. We have many fond memories of working with Phil and even more of socializing with him. We will hold these warm experiences close to our hearts.
Carol, Kathleen, Dean, may your memories of happy times give you comfort.
Sincerely,
Linda and Felix Barbetti

Carol, Kathleen and Dean,
I am so sorry to hear about Phil's sudden passing. My family's prayers are with your family at this time.
As I think back to my youth, I remember Phil fondly as "Uncle Phil" from the family Christmas and Easter holiday gatherings. He was always the tallest one and the second most jovial, after Uncle Ray of course! I remember looking at all the fish in the Ryan home family aquarium and Uncle Phil talking to me about the fish.
As I was looking at old photos, I found on of him with his family when he was about 4 years old. I wanted to add it to my post because the Phil at four has the same twinkle and the same curiosity as the picture you chose to use here.

Carol, I'm so sorry for your loss. I only met Phil a few times. I believe that last time was at Dad's visitation. I'm not sure what Phil was doing in the area but he stopped to pay his respects. He impressed me as being a genuinely nice person.
Our thoughts are with you and your family.

Thanks for the photo. I didn't have one of us for that time.I like the one of captain Phil with Adrian and Nick.I am sorry I didn't attend the memorial but the Covid situation and gathering restrictions made it very difficult with my immune system issues. He will always be my friend. Terry

Phil has been my loyal friend for over 50 years, from our days at high school. We had many strange adventures and lots of laughs while satisfying our quest to save the world from polluters and protect the local fishery. Phil's unique personality and sense of humor left people with the feeling that while he talked to you. he knew the joke punch line but wasn't quite ready to tell it. He was a dedicated, loving and caring friend, father, husband and colleague. He was proud of his career accomplishments as a fisheries biologist, especially on Lake Erie as well as his second career developing the Villa Nova Estates winery. Although we weren't able to see each other as often as we would like, we knew we were there for each other if needed. I love you, respect you and will miss you terribly. You will always be my best friend.

Tamio and I were deeply saddened to hear the news of Phil’s passing. Tamio’s and Phil’s friendship began over an old Allis Chalmers and continued through the local amateur wine club. Whenever we needed advice on winemaking Phil happily assisted. Phil was a true gentleman, kind and soft spoken. He will be missed. Our sincerest condolences to Carol, Kathleen and Dean.

My sympathy to Carol ,Kathleen, and Dean. I remember Phil organizing family get togethers in Sioux Lookout, Thunderbay, Craigleith, and Oliphant. He was always the life of the party .At one family wedding he had everyone wear paper hats and play the kazoos and sing songs to the wedding couple .More recently he was a generous host at Kathleen's wedding with homegrown chicken, duck, and wine. He also dropped into Beamsville to share a coffee with me on his trips back from the Vineland Research Station. A truly thoughtful man

So sorry to hear about Phil. Before his time, I worked as a student at Port Dover, but best remember him as a delightful colleague at meetings and conferences of the Great Lakes Fishery Commission. Last I saw him he was growing grapes for juice in prep for retirement. Sounds like the endeavour led him in new and fascinating directions! Deepest sympathy...

Kathy and I were so saddened when we were told Phil had passed. Phil and I started working together in 1973 and mornings with Phil were entertaining. On our way out to do field work with a coffee in one hand, a cigarette another all the while driving an old 3 speed stick shift on the column.
He will be missed by all who knew him Carol.

I have known Phil both professionally when he was the district biologist in Red Lake and personally as a fellow winemaker. I learned much about winemaking and fisheries issues from you and both Joyce and I thoroughly enjoyed our times working with you at the various events with Villa Nova Estates. You will be sorely missed. Rest In Peace, my dear friend.

Happy trails my friend...
What a great time we had at Niagara College and privately: making, fixing and tasting all sorts of wine. You followed your passion in wine and viticulture all the way.
Thanks for the picture you took a month ago when you came and gave me a chance to smile with you one more time.
I am very saddened to not see your smile anymore but I am sure you'll have a great tasting with the angels.
Missing you dearly...
