Dear Phil: What a legacy your Dad has left - his red cap and all. John was our "caretaker" when we Rotarians travelled to Togo, Africa. We simply had to look for his red cap, and follow it. He was a trustworthy leader, a gentle man and was kind to all. We were so proud to have him as our honorary member of the Rotary Club of Norfolk Sunrise and will miss him immensely. We were so sad to miss his funeral but will never forget "Mr. Norfolk" Sincerely Lucine and Gary McKay

Dear Philip and Family. My deepest and heartfelt condolences for the loss of your Dad. I will always remember how he and your Mother, took my brother(John Varao), to our very first trip to Niagara Falls. We went along with yourself and another young man who worked with us weeding and taking care of the ginseng, years ago during our summer breaks. It was such a thoughtful and wonderful gesture that I have not forgotten. You have been blessed to have such caring and selfless Parents. My prayers are with you and your family.

To Philip and your family. Mr Race is the most compassionate, caring, generous and loving man I have ever and will ever know in my lifetime. I am very very blessed to have had Mr Race in my life. Through all my years as a travel agent Mr Race was not only a client but a very good friend. I sometimes felt he and Mrs Race were grandparents to me. I appreciate the support Mr and Mrs Race gave me so I could go on that first trip to Africa. He was my special guide on that trip and was always looking out for me. I was never afraid while I was on that trip. He will be sadly missed. My love and thoughts go out to you and your family. We all have those wonderful memories of an outstanding man to hold on to. Thank you for sharing your dad. Judy Scrivener, aka Bridget

I have only known John Race for about a year. I envy those who have had the gift of knowing him longer than that. John and I were both both volunteers for the Grand River Team of the Trillium Foundation. We met at meetings and on one occasion at a visit to a group who had applied for a grant from Trillium. The man's knowledge was huge and his wit a delight. When he mentioned on a few occasions his calls to a variety of individuals seeking their support for a particular project, I was in awe.
John had completed his six-year term for Trillium but continued to attend meetings as a non-voting member because of the paucity of volunteers for this organization in Haldimand-Norfolk. On the occasion when this team awarded John a lovely plaque for his ten years of service, he quipped, "Hmmm, I see this says 'dash 2014' so I guess that means you're finished with me by then." He was quickly told by all present that they wanted that to be anything but the case.
Unfortunately, it is now the case and although I knew him for comparative so short a time, I will miss that good man's gentleness, wit, and iron hand in velvet glove, not my phrase but penned long ago, yet I can think of nothing that describes him better.

Personally and on behalf of the Council and citizens of Norfolk I extend sincere condolences to the family of John W. Race. John was a man dedicated to Norfolk and those things that make Norfolk the great place it has become. Truly a generous man yet humble. I will miss his friendship.
