Obituary of Doris Wilson

Please share a memory of Doris to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
WILSON UE, Doris Evelyn (McCallum) December 19, 1913-January 22, 2010 At Parkview Meadows Retirement Village in Townsend in her 97th year. Doris was born in Dorchester Ontario and raised there and in Bloomsburg. She was a graduate of Simcoe High School and Hamilton Normal School. Doris was a longtime resident of Waterford, moving there after her marriage in 1933. She was predeceased by her husband, Donald R. Wilson and her parents, Lorne and Evelyn (Robinson) McCallum. Doris was the dearest mother of Marilyn (Laurie) Branch, Joy (Hugh) Burtch, Linda (Alf) Mitchell, and Ted (Cyndy Wardrope). Dearly loved grandmother of Bob (Irene) Branch, Jeff (Brenda) Branch, Becky (Rick) Leclerc, Judi (Joel) Barr, and Jill (Gary) Winch. She was loved and loving greatgrandmother to Emma and Tressa Branch, Nicki and Ryan Branch, Culver and Wilson Leclerc, Brittany and Hailey Barr and Carly, Brooklynn and Davis Winch. She will also be lovingly missed by extended family Sue (Tony) Hawko, Rhianna, Ashleen, Amanda, Lee and Connor. Her family is her greatest legacy and she was so proud of each one. Doris was a teacher and school librarian for many years. She was actively involved in the community with membership and leadership roles in Women's Institute, Waterford, and Townsend Historical Society, Norfolk County Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society of Ontario, Spruce Row Museum, Eva Brook Donly Museum and the Grand River Branch of the United Empire Loyalists' Association of Canada. She was made Honourary Vice President of that organization in recognition of her many years of dedication. Her contributions to the Waterford Public Library and the two museums in artifacts and research were well appreciated. As a teacher, Doris made history interesting for her students through her ability to make stories of "long ago times" relative to the children. Her story about "Trees" (of Waterford) was an example of this and the book she later wrote told the tale of early settlement in Norfolk County through the eyes of a little girl in the days of the American Revolution. Her keen interest in local history made her a remarkable resource for individuals and organization. Doris enjoyed family camping and, after her retirement, she travelled the world where she made a point of learning the culture of that country. These insights were shared with family and friends. Doris was recipient of the prestigious Ontario "Senior Achievement award" in recognition of her accomplishments, one of these being author of her book "Sarah's Diary". The award was presented to her by the Lieutenant governor of Ontario. Friends may call at the THOMPSON-MOTT FUNERAL HOME, Waterford, Monday 2-4 & 7-9pm. Funeral Service will be held Tuesday in the chapel at 1;30pm. Rev. John Cruikshank officiating. Interment Greenwood Cemetery. Heartfelt thanks are extended to staff at "Gardenview" for their loving and gentle care, and to Theresa Bakker whose ministering brought such amazing comfort to Doris and her family.
